A screenless companion is a bet on a different interaction: no face, no menu, no wake word you have to remember. The body answers instead — it leans into a hand, sulks when left alone, gets bolder over weeks. That behaviour comes from three layers working together: touch and motion sensing, an emotional state model with slow drift, and a body whose motion is quiet enough to read as breathing.

Why screenless companions are harder than they look
With no face to animate, every emotion has to be carried by motion and sound: a slow breath, a lean into a hand, a purr that changes pitch when it is picked up. That means the personality is a behaviour schedule rather than a set of expressions, and the schedule has to be tuned against the battery budget — the same cuddle that feels warm in a demo can leave the product dead by evening. We write the behaviour layer and the power profile together for exactly this reason.
